Justice Week to target job cuts issue

The calling of Justice Week has become all the more urgent following the revelation on 15th October that the Ministry of Justice is planning to cut 10,000 jobs from Prisons, Probation and the Courts.

These cuts, if implemented, would mean that the services were unable to fulfil their statutory duties. This would have a knock-on effect on policing.

The internal paper which was leaked to The Times states that Probation must lose 1,320 jobs. Nearly 3,000 will go in the Prison Service and 3,124 in the Court Service. The paper states that the job losses will be made by a mix of natural wastage, less agency staff, early retirement, and a mix of voluntary and compulsory redundancies.

It is therefore critical that as many members as possible attend the national and regional events on the Wednesday and Thursday of Justice Week and make sure appointments are made with MPs in their constituencies on the weekend of 12th and 13th December.

Model letters have already been produced and a further one is now suggested (see keep on reading - below) as a matter of urgency to deal with the threatened job cuts.

The more letters MPs receive, the higher the issue becomes in their priorities.

Latest news on the Lobby of Parliament 10 December

All the justice sector unions will be getting together to lobby MPs in parliament on Wednesday 10 December. This will be a massive demonstraton of our joint concern over cuts to courts; probation workloads and pay; police pay; prison officers’ workloads and pay; pay levels in the justice sector generally; the effect of workloads, cuts and lack of resources to delivery of service.

Napo is looking for a mass turnout of members for this event. Put the date in your diary NOW!

Plans are already well advanced. Over 40 Peers, MPs, academics, trade union leaders, and pressure group activists have been invited to speak to the rally and lobby of Parliament on Wednesday 10 December. Three meetings will run simultaneously in Committee Rooms in the House of Commons and all members attending the event should be able to hear some of the contributions. Details will also follow soon of the Green Card system which members need to use in order to see their MP.

Coordinated Constituency Lobby in Justice Week

justice week web.jpgAt the end of Justice Week we are aiming to ensure that as many union members from all the justice sector unions and associations visit as many MPs in their constituency as possible, to explain to them the problems that the criminal justice system, and its staff, are experiencing.

You can help - Please write to your MP NOW using the model letter below. (Click the 'continue reading' link to find it). If you do not know who your MP is you can find them, and email them direct, from a link on the Napo website. Just type your post code in the ‘write to your MP’ box and click ‘go’.

Once you have received confirmation that your MP will see you during the weekend of 12-13 December, in their constituency, please email Napo so we can log the contact. Email – Kath Falcon

The aim is to lobby ALL MPs on that weekend.
