Centenary EDM

In a separate move, Edward Garnier MP, and officers of the Justice Unions’ Parliamentary Group have tabled Early Day Motion 833, which says:

“That this House congratulates the National Probation Service on its 100 year anniversary, and its contribution to local communities in rehabilitating offenders; and believes firmly that it has a vital role to play as a properly-funded public service for the long-term future.”

It would be useful if members contacting MPs could also ask them to sign up to this EDM. The key phrase is “properly funded public service”.

Already, at the time of posting 40 MPs have signed. To see the current total and a list of names click here.

Countdown to Bill Third Reading

A date has finally been announced for the Report Stage and Third Reading of the Offender Management Bill – Wednesday 28 February.

The main thrust of Napo's campaign over the next two weeks is to persuade as many Labour MPs as possible to sign up to Amendments put down by Neil Gerrard, which exclude probation core tasks from the Bill. At the time of posting, 18 MPs had signed to support the amendment including 15 Labour Members as listed:

Neil Gerrard, John Grogan
Katy Clark, Jon Trickett
Nia Griffith, Kate Hoey
David Drew, David Taylor
Dai Havard, Ian Gibson
John McDonnell, Kelvin Hopkins
Paul Truswell, Alan Simpson
Peter Kilfolye,

The next two weeks are the most important in the campaign and it is crucial that all members with Labour MPs write to them asking them to support Napo’s amendments and to vote against the Bill.

You can email your MP easily and directly from the Napo Home Page - just type your post code into the 'Stop the NOMS Bill' box.

If you want to write rather than email, a model letter can be downloaded below.
