Special Napo News

Colleagues caught me out at AGM by presenting me with this special edition of Napo News, going back over my 15 years as Gen Sec.
It brings back many memories. Mostly good!
I'm very grateful for the thought and the work that went into producing this.

Probation Service Cuts - Coverage and AGM

We often get in the Guardian, but today we made the Mirror with the cuts story.

Its typical that Ministers just talk of the increase on our budget, ignoring the increase in workloads that budget increases have not kept pace with.

I'm sure the probation cuts will be the subject of much debate at AGM this coming weekend.

Hope everyone has seen the AGM 2007 Blog which is now at the top of the Napo frontpage.

Information will be going on the blog in the run up to AGM and reports will be made during the weekend of key decisons and speeches.

Massive Cuts in Probation

Yesterday's budget announcement means massive cuts for the Probation Service, who will have to make a 3% efficiency saving year on year for the next three years.

This is clearly unrealistic. It could mean massive job losses and could have major implications for even more increased workloads.

Napo will be drawing up a campaign of action to oppose these cuts.

Here is the circular issued to branches today.

MoJ Review-Deferred

We now have confirmation that Ministers are still considering the proposals in the Ursula Brennan review of the Ministry of Justice. An announcement was to be made in early October, but we will now have to wait a few more weeks to hear the outcome.

Here is a copy of a circular I issued to branches today on this.
