WELCOME TO THE FIRST EDITION OF

NAPO Gwent & Glamorgan Branch

Eich Llais–Your Voice

The newsletter of

NAPO – Gwent and Glamorgan

This month’s ‘NAPO Newsletter’ represents the first time that the Gwent & Glamorgan branch has formally circulated a regular bulletin for its members. After much discussion, the branch collectively decided that a regular, bimonthly Newsletter – reflecting the concerns and needs of members within the South Wales Probation areas of both Gwent and Glamorgan - was an immediate priority.

Given the challenges facing practitioners within the Service at the current time, from financial constraints, increasing workloads and the threat of future ‘contestability’ (i.e. privatisation in all but name!), it is even more important to respond to these changes and challenges as a branch and to establish ‘a voice’ for ourselves within this new framework. As such, we are actively looking for contributions from members for inclusion in future editions – whether an article someone has written, information on local events or opinions on developments within our new ‘Trust’.

Inside this edition of Your Voice, are contributions from our General Secretary (Jonathan Ledger), an AGM Report from Llandudno by Rob Thomas, and an article on the future of Probation Training by John Deering of the University of Wales, Newport. Our lead JNCC Representative Pen John has also submitted her recent address to the branch for inclusion and continues to work extremely hard, together with her fellow reps, in articulating the interests of our members and ensuring proper accountability for policy decisions. A special thanks is also to be given to Team Manager Mike Hughes, for suggesting the name for the newsletter – his journalistic talents are clearly wasted in the Probation Service!
